If you're like us and you grew up watching Kerrang!TV with the magazine posters as your bedroom wallpaper and the free CDs in your Walkman you probably don't fancy Ed Sheeran as your wedding first dance.
Here are 6 ideas for you Millennial 'Elder Emos' out there for an alternative wedding first dance that you don't have to sway awkwardly to for four minutes.
This list is based on our most requested first dance songs as a Yorkshire based Wedding Band and songs we have seen first hand work a treat at UK weddings.

Still into you - Paramore
Of all the emo and pop punk throwbacks this song is our most requested first dance as a UK wedding band. It's got a great melody and lyrics but isn't a slow dance which means we can kick in and get your friends and family on the dancefloor with you early doors. We often start the song with a slow chorus broken down with just guitar and vocals with you both on the dancefloor together for around 15-20 seconds then restart the tune at original tempo and invite your guests up. Below is an example of how we start the song in a 'first dance style' before kicking in.
With Me - Sum 41
This one we played a while back for a live first dance but has come back around this year and has proven very popular. It's a more recent tune by Sum 41 but it's great melody, dynamics and lyrics really suit a first dance. There are many points in the song we can invite your guests on the dancefloor to join you once you give the nod.
Kiss Me - New Found Glory
This one we have played a couple of times recently and it went down a treat. As it is a cover of a Sixpence none the richer song from the 90s there’s a good there’s a good chance your guests will know or recognise the tune. The nice energy change in the chorus also makes for a great point to get your guests up with you. Below is us playing the song live at a Yorkshire wedding at the Venue in Halifax.
First Date - Blink 182
Another mega popular alternative first dance choice is First Date by Blink. Popularized recently by a viral cover by Taylor Acorn we tend to start off stripped back and slowed down into a ‘first dance style’ before the drums kick in and the song starts at full tempo and energy. A great choice if you can only stand 15 or so seconds by yourselves. Below is an example live at a wedding at the Pheasant Inn in Harome, North Yorkshire.
You Had Me at Hello - A Day To Remember
This track has proved very popular recently as a first dance. Famous for their hard hitting riffs and half time breakdowns it is a very melodic, emotive, lyrically poignant tune by a Metalcore band showing their softer side.
The Only Exception - Paramore
A second entry by Emo powerhouses Paramore. The Only Exception is as close to a traditional first dance song we have on this list. It has the beautiful melody, meaningful lyrics and a traditional waltz type feel to the music you can sway in time together to. We could get your guests up before a chorus or during the bridge section around 2:35.
There you have it. Six of the most popular alternate first dance song requests we receive as a Yorkshire based wedding band. We hope you found these ideas useful and remember it is only a guide, nobody says you even have to have a first dance, it is your day and your choice.
We have plenty more ideas, tips and inspo over on our SouthWestBand blog here.
In the meantime we wish you all the best with planning the kickass wedding you deserve!
